Central to Centro Presente’s mission, our Community Organizing and Advocacy activities seek to develop leadership within the Latino immigrant community and to connect our community with the issues that affect their lives. Our Community Organizers engage community members through workshops, home visits and other outreach efforts and from these encounters recruit members for our campaigns and activities. Active members are then eligible to be nominated to serve on our Board of Directors, which is elected at our Annual Member Assembly.
Our organizing goal is to engage Central American immigrants in developing their knowledge of their rights and of the root causes of immigration, as well as their leadership skills, so that with this awareness and increased capacity they may take a protagonist role in improving conditions for themselves and their families. Most of these Central American immigrants are women and children fleeing oppression and economic exploitation, endemic levels of extreme poverty, corruption and impunity in their countries of origin.
