Boston, MA- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is reportedly planning a nationwide surge in raids starting this month aimed at deporting adults and children who have already been ordered removed by an immigration judge.

Neither confirmed nor denied by the DHS, the plan represents a tremendous threat to families who would be returned to life threatening violence in their countries of origin.  On January 6 at 6 pm in front of the MA State House, Centro Presente is planning a vigil to publicly denounce this plan and to show solidarity with the families who are seeking refuge from violence and a better life for their children.

“We reject the idea that the government should be sending people back to violent situations that they have fled,” stated Isaac Chicas, Board member of Centro Presente. “Many of these families are basically refugees but are treated like criminals. We reject that.”

The numbers of unaccompanied minors and families apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border has risen sharply in October and November to about 10,600 minors, traveling without a parent, and about 12,500 family units detained according to Customs and Border Protection. By comparison, about 10,000 minors were apprehended in June 2014.
